How to Attract More Buyers for Your Home in 2025

2025 Homebuyers Want Move-In-Ready Properties: Here’s How to Prepare Your Home

Planning on selling your home this year? If so, you’re going to want to understand current buyer preferences to help you attract not just buyers, but the right buyers, as well as ensuring you maximize that sale price.

Even if a house isn’t what one would categorize as a “fixer-upper” it doesn’t mean that it’s move-in-ready. A recent Bright MLS survey reveals that over 56% of prospective buyers in 2025 prioritize move-in-ready homes. While you might be thinking, “My house is totally ready for someone else to live in it. I’ve been living in it for years!” That’s not exactly what move-in-ready means…

So What Does Move-In-Ready Mean?

There is so much that goes into the sale of a home, which if you’re selling means you’re no doubt aware of, at least from one side. The housing market is shaped by high home prices, rising inventory, and elevated mortgage rates, leaving buyers eager to avoid additional costs and post-closing hassles. What might seem like a minor thing to you can be a major issue to others, especially if there are multiple issues with the home. A move-in-ready home offers:

  • No Immediate Repairs: Buyers want to settle in without managing contractors or DIY projects.

  • Budget Predictability: Fewer surprise repairs make it easier to manage expenses.

  • Convenience: Move-in-ready homes allow for a smooth transition and immediate enjoyment.

Where Buyers Are Willing to Compromise

Despite the emphasis on move-in-ready properties, buyers understand trade-offs may be necessary. Chief Economist Lisa Sturtevant of Bright MLS notes, “Buyers are more likely to compromise on home size and location than on move-in-ready condition.”

  • Home Size: Nearly 75% of buyers are open to smaller homes if it fits their budget or location. Downsizing reduces costs and maintenance while maintaining quality and lifestyle.

  • Location: About 64% of buyers prioritize move-in readiness and affordability over proximity to work, schools, or amenities.

  • Budget Stretching: Approximately 38.8% of buyers are willing to exceed their budget for the right property, especially one with must-have features.

Preparing Your Home to Meet Buyer Demands

To capitalize on the demand for move-in-ready homes, consider these key steps:

  1. Complete Essential Repairs: Fix obvious issues like leaks, chipped paint, or squeaky doors. Small fixes can make a big impression!

  2. Invest in Cosmetic Upgrades: Affordable updates like fresh paint, modern hardware, and updated light fixtures can transform the look and feel of your home.

  3. Stage Your Home: Highlight your home’s best features by decluttering, depersonalizing, and arranging furniture to create an inviting atmosphere.

  4. Spotlight Energy Efficiency: With 32% of buyers prioritizing energy efficiency, consider upgrades like improved insulation or a smart thermostat.

Selling a Home That Isn’t Move-In Ready

If your home requires some work, don’t worry - buyers are still interested in properties with potential. In fact, some people are looking for homes that need a little work! In cases like these, you’re going to want to emphasize your home’s strengths, such as:

  • Solid Structure: Highlight its durability and sound construction.

  • Prime Location: Underscore desirable proximity to amenities or attractions.

  • Unique Features: Showcase architectural charm or standout design elements.

To ease buyer concerns, consider offering repair credits or a home warranty to make the property more appealing.

By focusing on what today’s buyers want, you can position your home for a successful sale in 2025. Whether your home is move-in ready or not, emphasizing its potential can attract motivated buyers in any market.
