Grill Smart This Fourth of July: Safety Tips for Your Backyard BBQ
The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and if you're anything like us, you're probably already dreaming of meats sizzling, corn on the cob charring to perfection, and a backyard (or courtyard) full of friends and family. Here in Mueller and throughout East Austin, the smell of barbecues and grills (there is a difference, as any true Texas will vehemently attest) in the air is as much a tradition as the fireworks.
As you're prepping your grill and your guest list, let's also make sure safety is on the menu. Here are a few quick and essential tips to help keep your home, your guests, and your festivities safe and fun:
1. Location, Location, Location
Before you even fire it up, make sure your grill is set up in a safe, open area. Keep it at least 10 feet away from your house, fence, or garage - yes, even if it’s raining. Never grill under an overhang or covered patio, and definitely not inside (no matter how tempting the AC might be!).
2. Check for Leaks and Grease Buildup
If you’re using a gas grill, inspect the hose for cracks or leaks before lighting it. You can do a quick soap-and-water test: if you see bubbles forming, don’t use it until it’s repaired. For all grills, clean out old grease and food residue that could ignite unexpectedly.
3. Supervise at All Times
It’s easy to get distracted while catching up with neighbors or checking on the kids, but never leave your grill unattended. Designate a Grill Captain (bonus points if they wear an apron and take their duties seriously!) to stay close and keep an eye on the flames.
4. Keep Kids and Pets Clear
Set a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the grill. The same goes for curious pups - keep them safe and out of reach from hot surfaces and potential spills.
5. Have the Right Tools Ready
Long-handled grilling tools, oven mitts, and a spray bottle of water (for minor flare-ups) are your best friends. It’s also smart to keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it - just in case.
6. Ditch the Lighter Fluid
While this might be more of a personal issue to us, we feel like the science is sound enough for us to support it. Don’t use lighter fluid with your charcoal grill (it goes without saying that lighter fluid is wholly unnecessary if you’re using propane or natural gas.) Overlooking the fact that you’re adding harmful chemicals to the food you are putting into your body, lighter fluid makes your food taste like, well, lighter fluid. Also, there’s no quicker and stupider way to lose your eyebrows - or worse.
7. Dispose of Coals Properly
If you're using a charcoal grill, wait until the coals are completely cool before disposing of them. Never dump hot coals in the trash or leave them near flammable materials.
8. Know When to Call It
If the wind picks up, or if flames get out of control, it’s OK to shut things down early. Safety always supersedes another hot dog.
